Why We Charge for Hearing Tests (When the Big Chains Offer Them Free)
Why does Tailored Hearing in Lancaster charge £45 for a 90-minute hearing assessment (was £95)? Honest, independent advice with no sales pressure.

If you've spotted "free hearing test" signs on the high street, you might wonder why we ask £45 for ours. It's a really good question, and we're happy to answer it.
Where the cost of a "free" test goes
Every appointment has a cost behind it: a qualified audiologist's time, specialist equipment and a quiet room to test in. When a test is free, that cost is usually recovered through hearing aid sales later on. It's a common way to run a business, but it does mean the appointment is often working towards a sale.
At Tailored Hearing, your £45 covers the appointment itself. That leaves us free to focus on one thing: understanding your hearing.
A proper 90-minute appointment
We set aside 90 minutes for every hearing assessment, so nothing feels rushed. During your visit we'll:
- chat about how your hearing affects everyday life, from conversations at home to busy cafés in town
- check your ears to make sure wax isn't affecting the results
- carry out a full set of hearing tests
- talk you through what your results mean, in plain English
You're welcome to bring a family member or friend along. It often helps to have someone to talk things over with afterwards.
Our assessment used to cost £95. It's now £45, a saving of £50, and there's no end date on the offer.
Honest advice, at your own pace
We'll never push you into a decision. If your hearing is within the normal range, we'll tell you. If wax is the cause, we'll explain your options. If hearing aids could help, we'll explain why, talk through the choices and leave the decision with you, with no pressure and no deadline.
